A poem for my daughter in a coffee shop

You stood right there
In your shoes, that dress
Not me. Not me.
You are always you
Right there, right here
I can hardly see
my own childhood anymore
when I look at you

When I look at you
I just see you

Things aren’t easy
These days, those days
But it all fades away
When you stand right there
In those shoes, that dress
You are always you

I promise I’ll try
I’ll be my best me

For both of us
Right there, right here
