We Need To Do Better
I shouldn’t have to tell her about Ferguson. Not because she’s too young. Not because it doesn’t matter.
Because Ferguson shouldn’t happen. Because young Black lives should be safe, not afraid, in this country.
Because police are supposed to protect all of us.
I don’t want to tell my (white) daughter that racism still permeates our society and our systems. Yes, even in Boston. Sometimes especially in Boston.
I don’t want to tell her that children are killed because they are Black.
But I will. And I do. And it’s hard and messy and I get it wrong so much of the time. Because I carry this privilege with me always, no matter what. This privilege she was born into, too.
I’ll mess it up, but we’ll keep talking.
Because we need to do better than this.
