The Ocean, Like Breathing (a poem)

IMG_6750.JPG

What is it about the ocean
That demands this kind of poetry
This kind of doubt
That kind of fear
All the space that poetry brings
These waves and depths
Both fill and leave alone

I can breathe a bit
When I stand here, walk here
I like the way
The sunlight hits the water.

I won’t write a poem about the ocean.

I’ll just like the light.
I’ll just take a breath.

The ocean doesn’t need me to write it.
I just get in the way. In my own way.

I’ll just like the light.
I’ll just take a breath.
