Being Gay Prepared Me To Be A Parent (on SheKnows.com)

I’m a planner. I like to be prepared. When we decided to start a family, I went into research mode. I was consumed by learning how it is we could start a family. Then when I (finally) got pregnant, I became consumed by research on how to actually be a parent. Let’s read all the books! Organize all the things! Make spreadsheets and schedules and budgets! The nesting instinct runs real strong around here.

But it wasn’t a spreadsheet that prepared me for parenting. It was so much my experience as an out lesbian that got me ready for this. Sometimes life breaks your heart. Just like parenting.
